The Weekly Top 3 (5.8.2023)
Why this #akleg session reminds of Beckett's "Waiting for Godot," recent op-eds and ads of Sen. Russel Long's summary of tax policy & why a stand-alone spending cap leads to deep PFDcuts
Welcome to The Weekly Top 3 — our look at the top 3 things on our mind here at Alaskans for Sustainable Budgets — for the week of May 8, 2023.
The Weekly Top 3 is a regular weekly segment on The Michael Dukes Show. The Show broadcasts on Facebook and YouTubeLive as well as via streaming audio from the Show’s website weekdays from 6–8am. I join Michael weekly in the first hour of Tuesday’s show, from 6:25–7am, for a discussion between the two of us about our three issues.
This week our top 3 issues are these: 1) why, as we follow the news on Alaska fiscal policy, we are continually reminded of Samuel Beckett’s play, “Waiting for Godot,” (2:10); 2) why, as we read the op-ed pages and even see Facebook ads, we are reminded of former US Senator and Senate Finance Chairman Russell Long’s summation of tax policy: “don’t tax me, don’t tax you, tax that guy behind the tree,” (21:57); and 3) why pushing forward on a spending cap alone — rather than as part of an overall fiscal package — is a trap for the PFD (31:46).
The segment is at the YouTube clip above. For those who prefer the audio version, it is available on our Spotify and Soundcloud pages. Go to the Show’s Soundcloud page here for this and other complete podcasts of The Michael Dukes Show.
